Cold Plunges and Female Fighters: What the Science Still Gets Wrong.

Cold plunges are everywhere.
They’re in your feed, in your gym, and in your “mental toughness” routine. But here’s what no one’s talking about:
The science behind cold plunges is overwhelmingly based on male bodies.
And women, especially female fighters deserve better.
At Unorthodoxx, we don’t follow trends. We question them.
Let’s unpack what cold immersion actually does to the female body and why one-size-fits-all wellness doesn’t fit women in boxing and combat sports.
👊 Why Cold Plunge Protocols Aren’t Built for Women
When you look at most cold plunge advice, 3 minutes at 5°C, daily, first thing in the morning, it sounds hardcore. But what’s missing is the fact that these protocols are based on studies done almost entirely on men.
Women have historically been excluded from clinical research because our hormones were seen as “too complicated.” That means most sports science, recovery, endurance, thermoregulation has been shaped by male data.
And yet those same protocols are being pushed onto women in boxing, MMA, and fitness without adjustment.
At Unorthodoxx, we call BS on that.
❄️ The Female Body Responds to Cold
Differently
🧠 1. More Cold Receptors
Women have more cold receptors in our skin. We feel cold sooner, more intensely, and our bodies shiver faster, which means we may experience stress sooner than men during cold immersion.
🌀 2. Hormonal Vulnerability
Your luteal phase (the second half of your cycle) already raises cortisol levels. Add cold stress to the mix, and you could be facing hormonal imbalance, fatigue, or disrupted recovery.
🦋 3. Thyroid and Adrenal Impact
Women are more prone to thyroid dysfunction. If your metabolism already runs slow, cold plunges may make it worse. leading to fatigue, slow recovery, or plateaued performance.
🥊 For Fighters: Cold Exposure Can Compromise Recovery
As a female boxer, you’re already pushing limits. Your nervous system, your joints, your hormones, they’re all under pressure from training.
If your body is already in a state of stress, dumping it into ice water might not be “tough” it might be self-sabotage.
Unorthodoxx believes in training smart, not just hard. And that includes knowing when to push, and when to protect.
🔥 The TCM Perspective: Protect Your Power
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), cold is seen as depleting to Yang Qi : your body’s vital, warming energy. For women, this includes:
The Ming Men Fire – the energy behind adrenal power, fertility, and libido
Uterine Health – Cold can “invade” the uterus, contributing to cramps, irregular cycles, and hormonal chaos
TCM has over 2,000 years of clinical wisdom warning women to protect this fire.
Modern performance science is just now catching up.
⚠️ Who Should Be Cautious With Cold Plunges?
Cold plunges MAY NOT be ideal if you:
Feel cold often, especially in hands/feet
Have irregular or painful periods
Experience fatigue or burnout
Struggle with thyroid, adrenal, or hormonal issues
Are in your luteal phase or menstruating
🔁 So What Should You Do Instead?
You don’t need to freeze to be fierce.
💥 Focus on recovery protocols that honour your cycle:
Sauna or infrared heat therapy
Magnesium baths
Lymphatic massage
Sleep & nutrition tailored to your hormone phase
💥 Stay warm and supported in the ring and out of it, because cold is a stressor, not a badge of honour.
💬 At Unorthodoxx, We’re Redefining Recovery
Female athletes need recovery protocols designed for female bodies. "Full stop."
We believe in strength that’s informed, in training that’s intelligent, and in fighters who know how to listen to their bodies.
Cold plunging isn't one-size-fits-all especially for women.
If you’re into sea swimming or cold exposure and your hormones are balanced, you might genuinely feel the benefits. But if your body screams “no” especially at certain points in your cycle then trust that. Just because it's trending doesn't mean it's right for you right now.
At Unorthodoxx, we believe in training smarter, not just harder, no internet hype. Your cycle, your hormones, your rules.
Stay powerful, stay intuitive, and always put your body first.
